It will come as no surprise that we are advocates for Diversity, Equality & Inclusion in the workplace. Research has proven that diverse teams experience increased productivity, innovation, and a greater overall sense of community.

At Baltic Apprenticeships, we practice what we preach, and we aim to provide opportunities for all. We employ apprentices across all our departments and 61.9% of our overall workforce are women!

This is a special edition of our Celebrating Women in Tech series; we are thrilled to introduce one of our very own Level 3 Junior Data Analyst apprentices – Faith Khan!

Faith is a fantastic role model for women that are considering entering the Tech industry. Here is what Brooke Urwin, Baltic’s Chief Operating Officer, had to say about Faith.

“Faith is a little superstar and has an extremely bright future ahead of her. In recent months she has focused her efforts on a core business area and now shares the responsibility of our retention data with our Lead Analyst.”

We hope this series inspires you to consider entering the Tech industry through an apprenticeship – regardless of your gender, age, or current career path.

MEET FAITH

Hi! My name is Faith Khan, I’m 19 and currently on the Level 3 Junior Data Analyst apprenticeship with Baltic Apprenticeships. I’ve been with Baltic for a year now and have met some really inspirational women here who have massively motivated me in my career!

FAITH, WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO ENTER THE TECH INDUSTRY?

I have always been interested in maths and statistics, I did further maths at college and particularly enjoyed the statistical content, it was the branch of mathematics that seemed most relevant in the real world which sparked an interest.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

Every day looks a little different in terms of the project I’m working on and who I’m working with. I communicate with different stakeholders, who may request dashboards or an ad hoc piece of analysis that aims to answer a question they have.

I use Tableau to create dashboards that users can navigate and keep up to date with KPI’s etc. However, when I do an in-depth analysis, a written report or in-person meeting is usually required to communicate my findings; I find report writing and presentations most effective for collaborative work as it means I can answer any additional questions and gauge whether I need to do further analysis on the subject based on stakeholder feedback.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST EXCITING PROJECT YOU HAVE WORKED ON SO FAR?

A primary focus of mine over the past few months has been our apprentice retention here at Baltic. I have recently done a project around how our early retention impacts late retention.

Through statistical analysis done in R Studio, I found that by capturing retention rates at the 120-day mark, we can gauge a really good idea of where we will be at day 365. The previous face of early retention was 90 days however due to my analysis we have now adjusted it to be 120 days.

My research has proven that enhanced insight is made possible by using this indicator – this was a very proud moment for me!

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS?

I hope that 5 years from now I’ll still be working in the data industry, but I will have upskilled and be at a much more advanced level; I have acquired so many new skills in just a year, and with 5 more years, there is the potential to develop and expand to new levels and I’m very excited to see where I can go!

WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION?

Hedy Lamarr! Hedy was a film actress and inventor. She was awarded for her “secret communication system” used during the war which eventually inspired Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth!

Her intelligence is so inspirational, and working in the tech industry as a woman, this type of story gives me so much confidence and shows that if you want to, you really can thrive in the tech world as a woman!

FINALLY, WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR THE FUTURE GENERATIONS OF WOMEN ENTERING THE TECH INDUSTRY?

My advice for anyone considering a career in the tech industry is to push yourself out of your comfort zone!

I was never encouraged to do an apprenticeship at school, but it was the best decision I have ever made. Having the opportunity to learn while working has not only unlocked the door to a wider range of careers but has meant that my development has been accelerated massively.
